High-Performing Teams Aren’t Hired—They’re Developed.

Issue #2 | June 2025

Hello Reader,

Do you ever feel like your team is trying hard, but still isn’t delivering the level of performance or results you expect?

They have the right attitude.
They align with your culture.
But when it comes to execution, they just aren’t equipped.

If that sounds familiar, then what you’re likely missing is a clear system to build and scale competencies across the organization.

Let’s break this down.

We’ve spoken about the tree metaphor before, your business as a tree:

  • Fruits = Results
  • Branches = Teams & Functions
  • Trunk = Leadership & Systems
  • Roots = Core Values

Now, zoom in on the branches.
What makes them strong? What allows them to bear more fruit?

It’s not just alignment with the roots.
It’s also about the internal strength of each branch—how well-equipped they are.

That’s what competencies are:
The skills, knowledge, and capabilities each individual or function needs to consistently perform and deliver.

🧭 What Are Your Options?

As a business owner, you have two primary options when performance is lacking:

1. Hope that people will “figure it out” over time.

Spoiler: They usually don’t. Time doesn’t build capability—training, feedback, and structure do.

2. Deliberately Build Competencies

This means:

  • Defining what “great performance” looks like role by role
  • Creating training pathways or learning loops
  • Putting systems in place to develop people proactively, not reactively

Remember—Culture creates the platform. Competency delivers the performance.

"If culture is the roots, then competency is the muscle."

🧩 The Solution: Define. Display. Drive.

In Summary:

  • Even culturally aligned teams can underperform when they aren’t equipped with the right skills.
  • Competency is the internal strength that enables consistent execution.
  • If culture is the roots, competencies are the muscles—essential for lifting the weight of results.
  • High-performing businesses don’t just hope for talent—they build it, role by role, system by system.

"When competency becomes part of your business rhythm, performance follows."
